Bay Area Medical Academy and UCSF Partner to Train Over 100 San Francisco Residents for Entry-Level Careers in Medicine — For Free
The region’s leading healthcare education training school and the largest healthcare employer are joining forces to ensure San Franciscans can access entry points to careers in the medical field, and the Bay Area is equipped to meet its current and future medical workforce needs.

SAN FRANCISCO, USA. 22nd August, 2024 - Bay Area Medical Academy (BAMA), a post-secondary medical training school accredited by MSA and approved by the U.S. Department of Education University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) are partnering to train over 100 San Francisco residents for careers in medicine. Graduates of the nine-month long program will complete coursework, hands-on clinical skills training, and an externship at UCSF, earning licensure in Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, and EKG Technician. Students who successfully complete the first four months of the program are guaranteed an interview with a UCSF recruiter. The program is free for residents of San Francisco, thanks to generous support from UCSF.

“The opportunities that open up for our students when they begin their careers after graduation are life-changing,” said Bay Area Medical Academy CEO Simonida Cvejic. “UCSF’s support for our school is extraordinary. Both financially and as an employer-partner in the community. It means so much to our students to have these opportunities open up for them.”

The Bay Area healthcare workforce shortage is worsening. Meanwhile, one in four San Francisco households does not earn enough to make ends meet. Medical Assistants in the Bay Area average $56,000 in earnings in their first year.

“We're proud to be partnering with Bay Area Medical Academy to train San Franciscans for healthcare careers,” said Jeffrey Chiu, vice president and assistant vice chancellor of Talent Management at UCSF and UCSF Health. “When we create career pathways, it has a direct impact on our communities, improving health, economic opportunity, and ensuring that participants have the support needed to succeed and thrive across our organization.”

The Medical Assisting with Phlebotomy and EKG Program provides entry-level students with a solid foundation in clinical and administrative duties to prepare for a successful entry into the medical field. The program consists of three components: administrative skills training, clinical skills training, and a clinical externship. The first seven modules are classroom modules taught in hybrid mode, followed by students a 200-240 hour clinical externship through UCSF’s Medical Assisting Academy.

Though the program is entirely free, paid for by UCSF, all applicants are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applications for the cohort are due October 1st, and class begins on October 28th.
